Option For Replacing Swing-Away Actuator On A 2005 Mastercraft Boat Trailer

Updated 07/10/2025 | Published 02/07/2024

Question:

I have a 2005 mastercraft x10 boat with a mastercraft trailer. The surge brake needs to be replaced. It also has the actuator on the back of the surge brake. What do I need to replace the surge brake. I am struggling to find a surge brake that will fit into the current swing away.

We do have a potential solution for you. Unfortunately, the swing away actuators like the one on your 2005 Mastercraft trailer have been discontinued, so I am afraid there is no direct replacement, or anything that will fit inside the current swing away.

At this point we would have to recommend replacing the tongue of the trailer entirely, all the way down to the swing away. For a replacement option I recommend the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX89FR. This has a 7,500 lb trailer capacity, is designed for trailers with disc brakes, and is designed to be bolted on to a 3" wide tongue.

For a replacement swing away adapter we have the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB340301 which fits a 3" x 4" tongue. The swing away adapters are available in different sizes if needed.

I have attached an installation video below for your reference.

Is the Dexter DX7.5L the correct trailer brake actuator for my 2004 Mastercraft Xstar with trailer TA-05-Xstar D3-000097? If not what is the correct actuator? Thank you for your assistance. Jeff Allmaras 760-522-3400

@Jeff Hey Jeff, I was not able to find any refeences for the part number you provided, but the Dexter Dexter DX7.5 may work on your camper. As long as your actuator is bolted on and fits over a 3" tongue you can be sure it will work. We have options for both disc and drum brakes: - Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-00 - Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-20
