For years, this UFP-style surge brake actuator has been the gold standard for boat trailers. Its low-profile design looks sleek, and can be easily welded and and painted to match your trailer. Includes the fill cap. Made in the USA.

Features:

  • Lets you back up without locking up your trailer brakes when using the manual lockout pin (DX49FR - sold separately)
  • Creates a sleek look with its low-profile design
    • Coupler latch sits flush with the actuator's body
  • Provides you with a reliable, secure connection
    • Latch mechanism only engages when the hitch ball is fully seated
    • Safety pin keeps the socket closed around the ball, even if the latch pops up
  • Resists rust and corrosion
    • Aluminum master cylinder is rustproof, unlike cast steel ones
    • Fill cap prevents fluid contamination
  • Includes breakaway cable with S-hook
  • Welds onto your trailer tongue
    • Primed finish is easy to weld and paint
  • Certified by the SAE for safe, reliable operation
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with hydraulic drum brakes
  • Designed to weld on top of a 3" wide tongue
  • Ball size: 2"
  • Gross towing weight: 7,500 lbs
  • Dimensions: 17-1/2" long x 4-3/16" tall
  • 2-Year limited warranty

If your trailer isn't married to just one tow vehicle, this Dexter actuator will be a great option for you. Just keep in mind that because it doesn't have a reverse lockout on it to keep your brakes from locking up, you will need to have free-backing brakes instead.

UFP by Dexter: New Name, Same Great Actuator

If you're replacing your old actuator, you're probably looking at this one and thinking, yeah, that looks like mine alright, but doesn't UFP make these? The short answer is that Dexter bought out Unique Functional Parts (UFP) in 2013, changed the name, but kept the awesome design. Rest assured, this is the real deal and not some kind of knockoff.

Simple, Secure Connection

Trigger latches on traditional couplers can be kind of a pain to work with sometimes.

A close-up view of a mechanical latch in the closed position on a Dexter trailer brake actuator A close-up view of a mechanical latch in the open position on a Dexter trailer brake actuator

For starters, you have to hold the latch up as you lower the coupler onto the hitch ball. Not to mention that the latch can stick out like a sore thumb, so it may get bent or broken by your tailgate or your bumper as you go to hitch up. That's more than just an inconvenience; when your coupler is out of commission, your trailer's not going anywhere with you.

The coupler on this UFP-style actuator negates all of that. Just slide the button on top with your thumb while you lift up the latch handle. Then, place the coupler over the center of your hitch ball and lower your trailer with your tongue jack.

When you can close the latch without forcing it, you'll hear a click. This sound tells you that the ball is seated firmly inside. Then, just re-insert the tethered safety pin, hook up your safety chains and your breakaway cable, and you'll be ready to tow.

How Does a Surge Brake Actuator Work?

When you slow to a stop as you're towing, momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. When this happens, the surge brake actuator compresses the master cylinder inside, which forces it to push hydraulic fluid out to your brake lines, ultimately engaging your trailer brakes. When you start moving again, the actuator will telescope back out, stopping the flow of fluid back to the brakes and allowing your trailer's wheels to start rolling again.

Came packaged well and in a timely manner. Product just as expected. Installed and ready to go.

by:

Worked great, replaced an old Atwood, welded in where the old one was cut out. Minor modification to the brake line, easy to bleed master cylinder and then bleed brake system. Coupler is extremely easy to use.

I installed this brake actuator on a 3500 lb boat trailer with drum brakes, is working great so far. Needed to replace the existing broken hitch on my trailer and this was a suitable replacement to get the brakes working again.

by:

Fast courteous service, great equipment.

worked great

My 1993 Jayco 1206 pop-up was originally equipped with an Atwood weld on hitch with surge brake actuator. The actuator became seized and unserviceable and was obsolete, so it couldn't be replaced. I got this replacement hitch, cut the old one off, and had this one welded on. This is a great option and will be much more serviceable in the future. I am very pleased!

by:

Product as described and will be the needed replacement for the existing actuator on the trailer.

Paul is awesome!!
I was very pleased
with the way he handled the order. I was going to order it online but he suggested that he could possibly have it delivered in 3-4 days. Actually it was delivered in 24 hours.
I thought [other retailers] were quick about deliveries till I ordered from etrailer.
The coupler and the brake actuator fit perfectly and definitely was a great replacement from the Atwood coupler.
Thanks. Paul.

I ordered late Tuesday evening. It shipped on Wednesday, arrived Friday and my boat trailer was fixed by Friday evening. Product was exactly as advertised and the perfect replacement for my damaged one. Quick and accurate shipping had me back out fishing by the weekend. Very impressed with etrailer service levels.

by:

Was exactly what I was expecting, good quality, a fair price, and will fit right on my trailer tongue.
Good job!!!

by:

Product specs are right on. Well built.

  • Is it Normal for Surge Actuator to Not have Any Wires Ran to It
Hey Jeff, it's definitely possible for a surge actuator to not have any electrical components. Normally the need for wiring or electronics on a surge coupler is for an electric reverse lockout to allow the trailer to be backed up. But some couplers have manual lockouts or if it's a drum brake setup there are free-backing brake assemblies that do not require any lockout at all. So what you have is very likely to be totally correct. Have you tried backing that trailer up yet?

  • Where to Weld Dexter DX7.5L A-60 on 3-1/2" Trailer Tongue
Hey Rick! I would expect to weld the Dexter DX7.5L A-60L # DX53FR (drum) or # DX43FR (disc) to the top of the trailer tongue. You might need some extra material to get it to attach properly. If it will fit inside of the tongue as is, or if you want to modify the tongue to weld it inside, that is also fine. If you're willing to weld or take it to a welder there is always a way to make it work.

  • Solution for Brake Actuator on 3-1/2" Trailer Tongue
For a brake actuator that will fit your 3-1/2" tongue you will need a weld-on model. None of the bolt-on will fit a 3-1/2" tongue as you said. I recommend the Dexter DX7.5L A-60XL # DX43FR if you have disc brakes or the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 # DX53FR for drum brakes. These are technically listed for a 3" wide tongue as well but that won't matter with welding. Make sure to take them to a certified welder for installation. You will also need to add the # T4748800 if you're getting the drum brake...

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For Discontinued Atwood 85739
You are correct that the Atwood 85739 has been discontinued along with all of the replacement parts for it. I recommend replacing it with the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout - Weld On - Disc - 2" Ball - Primed - 7.5K # DX63FR if you have disc brakes or # DX53FR if you have drum brakes. I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.

  • Replacement Hydraulic Drum Brakes, Hub/Drum, and A-60 Actuator for 3,500 lb Axles on Boat Trailer
We have exactly what you're needing! For replacing your hub/drum assemblies you need the kit # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K (2 per axle) and then for the brakes you need the kit # AKFBBRK-35-D (1 per axle). The actuator is a little different simply because there are multiple styles for installing the actuator on your trailer coupler so you'll want to look through these options to see which A-60 best matches your current A-60 actuator: - Top Mount 3-Bolt # 099-175-00 - Top Mount 3-Bolt # DX33FR ...

  • Difference Between Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuators
Hi Bill, So the difference between the two DX7.5L A-60 brake actuators is just that one is for trailers with disc brakes and the other is for trailers with drum brakes: - Drum Brakes: Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX53FR - Disc Brakes: Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX73FR So you'll just want the one that is for the type of brakes you have on your boat trailer. Disc brakes require more psi from the master cylinder in the actuator than drum brakes, so that's what the internal...

  • Can a Surge Brake Coupler Be Replaced With a Curt No Latch On a Mastercraft Trailer?
Based on some information I could find I believe you currently have a actuator like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX53FR on your Mastercraft trailer. To switch to a Curt QuickPin No-Latch Trailer Coupler # C54UR you will need to ensure your trailer will not exceed 3,500lbs when fully loaded. You will also need to verify with your local laws your trailer is being legally operated as many laws will require trailer brakes if over a certain weight no matter how far you tow. Since...
