Question:
What kind of routine maintenance is required for this hitch system? Some WD systems need regular adjustment, for example. Second question, if Equalizer doesnt fit this bill, can you recommend a WD hitch system that is relatively simple and maintenance free? Thanks

Equal-i-zer has a small section in the owner's manual for the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37101ET that lists where to check for wear and places to add some lube as needed. You'll essentially just need to grease the head of the hitch where the spring bar receivers touch the head with their specific lubricant # EQ91-00-4250. I wouldn't go crazy with the lube either, just enough of a coating to prevent sticking or corrosion build up.
You'll definitely want to store your hitch away from the elements when not in use and use a high quality spray paint if your paint gets scratched or chipped to prevent rust from forming. You'll have a bit of rust where the spring bars touch the L-brackets but that's totally normal since there's friction there. Do not lubricate this point because your springs bars will then glide instead of sticking and you'll lose the sway control benefit this hitch provides.
As for recommending another hitch, I would have to know the tongue weight of the trailer to see the available options and then work through which requires the least amount of care. To be honest most WDH don't really require much maintenance besides what I've already listed above. There are others with specific grease zerk fittings to use instead of wiping lube on but this same process is pretty prevalent throughout most models.
