Does Curt Wriing for a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Require Connecting the Power Wire to the Battery

Updated 03/11/2024 | Published 01/10/2024

Question:

Does the Curt 56407 have a power wire that I have to run to the battery on my 2024 Wrangler? I'd prefer not to have to do that.

Yes, the Curt T-Connector # 56407 will require you to route a power wire from the black module box to the battery on your 2024 Jeep Wrangler.

I know it isn't convenient, but it's the best setup when it comes to a trailer wiring harness since this tees in behind your tail lights and then powers your trailer lights via the battery in your Jeep. The separate 12V power wire powers your trailer lights but also doubles as a way to protect the OEM wiring on your Jeep.

Is there any reason you can use a CIGAR LIGHTER POWER OUTLET 12V POWER WIRE HARNESS ADAPTER to get the 12v needed for the control module, this power outlet is in the rear of the Jeep and on its own 20 fuse,?

@Mike Thanks for reaching out! I always recommend just following the instructions from the wiring manufacturers. If that outlet is rated high enough I suppose you can technically run the trailer wiring off of it, but then the problem is if you do end up needing to use that outlet while you're also towing then you run the risk of overdrawing the circuit and blowing a fuse - which then means you're towing a trailer with no lights. From a safety standpoint it's best to just route a power wire up to the battery so that everything is isolated and you don't have the option for different functions to react to each other.

Thanks Jon, I would rather remove the outlet or just disconnect it, I could always take the power wire and put a plug on it, and stow it where the jack is kept, and just plug it into the outlet if i need to tow something. That way nothing else can be plugged into it, thanks again.
