Is There a Longer Hitch Pin to Use a Yakima ROC 2 Bike Rack in a 2021 Toyota Tacoma 2" Hitch

Updated 11/29/2024 | Published 08/26/2023

Question:

Is this compatible with a Yakima ROC 2 in a 2021 Tacoma factory hitch? The original ROC 2 bolt is too short for the Tacoma 2inch hitch. The hitch thickness must be thicker than the 2011 X3 hitch the Tacoma replaced.

We have actually seen this issue before. The 2" receivers on Toyota trucks and SUVs have a slightly larger diameter on the outside of the receiver tube than most typical 2 inch hitches. This is partially the powder coating, but the steel itself is also a bit thicker.

With that said, the Replacement Shank and Pivot Hardware # Y8780018 would not be what you want to use. You actually want the Replacement Hitch Bolt for Yakima # Y8890200. Yakima says that it will have the same thread pitch and diameter that the Roc 2 used, but is approximately 1" longer overall.

I do recommend measuring the outside of the receiver tube, but as long as it's less than 3-1/2" you will be able to use this hitch pin.

Hi Scott, I’m having a similar problem on my Rivian R1S. The receiver is too wide to allow me to put the lock on the hitch pin. It is plenty secure, but we have a fair amount of trail head theft around SLC, so I prefer a way to lock the pin. Any suggestions? I’m assuming the bolt would need to be closer to 5” to allow for the lock. Thanks, David

@DavidG David, it looks like the longest pin Yakima offers for their ROC bike rack is the Replacement Hitch Bolt for Yakima HoldUp 2, OnRamp, and BigHorn Bike Racks and DryDock Canoe Carrier # Y8890200 which is 4-9/16" long. hopefully that is long enough to get you where you need to be. This hitch pin does not have a lock on it, but it does thread into the hitch using a lock washer and secures using a clip. So, in theory a thief would need to have the correct socket in order to loosen and remove the pin.
