Yes, the Blue Ox Patriot BRK2012 does have a built in battery backup. So if the vehicles battery starts to go low, you have a bit of reserve backup in the brake unit itself.

Now the BRK2012 is no longer available, the new version is BRK2022. Our part number is # BLU37TR. The new version does not have an internal battery. So if you lose power it will not function. It does have a built in superconductor that will activate brakes if brakeaway occurs, and will keep the brakes activated for up to 30 minutes.

@David Hey David. In theory, yes the backup battery could be replaced, but this is not something that should be done DIY. It would void your warranty and for such a critical safety device it is not worth the risk. Its much safer and smarter to have the unit sent in to Blue Ox for an authorized refurbish.
