If the Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Was Not Installed Into Studs Is It Safe To Use?

Question:

My husband installed a Surco 502L ladder on the back of our travel trailer. Im concerned if it is secure enough. I dont want to question him and cause a fight, so Im here for some advice. The top of the ladder is screwed into the roof framing and is very secure. However, Im concerned because I didnt see him use a stud finder when attaching the back wall brackets. I did get a blueprint after the fact from the rv manufacturer of where the prepped backer is and he did not attach it anywhere near there. IF he didnt hit any studs on the back and just secured it through the azdel siding, but the top is secured into the frame, will that be enough support to not rip the siding on the back connection points? I may be overthrowing it but this may be a very expensive mistake. ?? Please send help!

I can't say for certain that it will rip out if your husband didn't hit any studs when he installed the bottom brackets on the Stromberg Carlson Exterior RV Ladder - Aluminum # LA-401, however I can say it is dangerous and not at all recommended to use the ladder in that capacity.

Seeing as though you already sort of confirmed for yourself via the blueprint that he was no where near where he needed to be, I'd say your best bet is to: unscrew the ladder from where its at, use a stud finder to find the suds, and re-install it.

It may be an expensive mistake, but it is for sure going to leave a bunch of 1/4" holes on the side of your trailer. These holes can be filled and repainted over, but I'd recommend taking it to a body shop that can work with fiberglass so you can know the job is being done correctly.
