Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Dimensions

Your solar panel or AC is on the fritz on a hot day, and you need to quickly climb to the roof to look at them. Or perhaps there are leaves and branches on top and you want to brush them off before retracting the slide outs to head home. This exterior ladder attaches to the rear or side wall of your RV, camper, or motorhome, so you can safely access equipment on the roof for maintenance and cleaning. And because it's made of durable aluminum construction, it won't rust when it rains during a camping trip or snows when your RV is in storage during the off season.

Prepping for Installation

Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder

First, choose which wall you want to install the assembled ladder on. Traditionally, this ladder would mount on the back, but you can also mount it onto the side, especially if your RV has a rear awning. And for this ladder to be safe to climb, you'll need to install it onto the studs in the wall. If you're unsure where the studs are, use a stud finder (not included).

Fits Any RV or Camper

This ladder has a universal design because you're able to cut it to fit just about any RV or camper. Just measure the height of your RV to see how tall of a ladder you need. Then use a tube cutter or hacksaw (not included) to trim the ladder until it's a perfect fit. Keep in mind that the bottom step should sit between 6" and 12" from the top of the bumper.

Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Installation

Then the ladder bolts onto the roof and wall of your RV with the included mounting hardware. If the ladder isn't a direct replacement, or if your RV doesn't currently have a ladder, drilling will be required.

Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Swivel Brackets

You can pivot the integrated mounting brackets at the top of the ladder to ensure it sits flush with your RV roof, even if your roof is curved in the back or on the sides. This allows you to position the angle of the ladder so that it remains parallel to the back wall of the RV. If the roof is curved on the sides, trim the vertical section of the arm furthest away from the side of the RV, which will eliminate the difference in the slope between the arms of the ladder.

Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Swivel Hinges

The included swivel hinges connect the bottom and middle sections of the ladder. Depending on the shape of your RV wall and the amount of flex you want your ladder to have, you'll need to make sure that the hinges are oriented correctly. If you're installing this ladder onto a sloped or curved wall, twist the hinges to where they're pointing outward to the side. If you're installing this ladder onto a flat wall, twist the hinges to where they're facing forward. Once you've positioned the hinges where you want them, tighten them down.

Stromberg Carlson RV Ladder Standoffs

Then position the 4 included standoffs (or ladder supports) along the ladder to help keep it secure to your RV when it's being climbed or when you're driving to the campsite. Drilling into the ladder is required to mount the standoffs. 2 Standoffs need to be attached approximately 8" to 10" below the swivel hinges, and the other 2 should be placed more toward the top of the ladder. If you're installing the ladder onto a straight wall, the standoffs should be placed closer to the hinges to prevent flexing.

When I purchased the ladder, my concern was the possibility of the old holes and new holes matching. They were a little off and to solve that problem, I cut aluminum plates to cover all holes. See pictures.

Great

by:

This is a good, inexpensive ladder. I am 170 lb and is always feels secure. I put this on the rear of ny 1993 Safari Trek 2400, mainly to access my solar panels. I used some high quality GE silicone adhesive sealant under the bases for the best seal possible (also what I used for adhesion and sealing under my solar panel mounts.

It is very light, and I don't know how it would be if you're around 200 lb or so. Honestly, I would be the most concerned about the motorhome shell. If you have food wood blocking behind it, or access to add them, it would most likely be fine.

by:

The ladder is adequate for my use. I go on the Rv roof to install it’s cover and it holds me well. I weigh just under 200lbs. Does not ‘look’ very strong but it serves its purposes for me well. No complaints. Good value for the money.

Extremely fast service.
I have a Dutchman
Voltage V-3905 Toy Hauler. etrailer recommended that I get the LA-401 ladder and the LA-148 extension, as the original 110" ladder is not available through etrailer, and cost over $300 from Dutchman through the camping store. The two items came to just over $100 so I got the free shipping. I placed my order yesterday at about 2pm. They were delivered to my house by UPS at 10:14 this morning, wow!
They look very good, I don't plan to install them until this spring when it warms up a little (presently we have 15" of snow on the ground). I will add an update and a photo afterwards.

by:

Great ladder, perfect fit, rock solid. I have a toy hauler, so a rear mount was out.

Still great!

by:

We always know we can count on etrailer for quality at a great price. The ladder was easy to install and was exactly what we needed.

by:

Needed a new ladder because I backed into a tree :(
This one filled the bill. Package arrived in horrible shape, but everything was there and undamaged. Installation was a challenge for me, but got it done.

by:

Easily installed, good fit and finish, helped make this custom job go smoother!

We had a problem with the new buildout of our teenage boy's bedroom. I started looking at ladders and then the RV ladder idea happened. I had no doubts about this and knew it was going to be a big hit. I made a believer out of everyone and now it's the talk of the town. Thanks guys!

Thank you for posting this! Im not all that handy and I was not sure if this kind of ladder was only meant for RVs or if they could be used inside as well. I have a very similar loft in my room that Id like to utilize and your example has been a big help in the decision making process! Thank you for posting pics!!

by:

All worked out good. I wish you had bracket braces specs in there. Would work out good on stud lay out. Up or down, or horizontal lay out for brace screws. I had to add another 2x2 for horizontal. All in all made it fit fine. Looks and works great. I will add I had my camper re-framed about 2 feet in and rebuilt it, so don’t guess if you find a stud or a good solid place to bolt to.... I framed my studs in the back to hold this ladder. Thanks 2008 Keystone Sprinter

by:

I have not installed the ladder yet. Hope to get it installed next week. I did get chance to play with it some and it seems to match the ladder that I am replacing. The brackets are just a little different but pretty close. I am waiting on some Dicor Roof Compound to come in before I get started. Over all I think it will be a perfect match.

I installed ladder and it works great. I weight 210 lbs and have not had any problems. Seems to be pretty strong. Mounting brackets fit in original holes which was good.

by:

A great improvement on our 5th wheel camper. I now can get on the roof to check all our slide-outs to keep them free of obstacles when we put the slide in. Cleaning the roof of the camper is much easier also. I highly recommend having a professional install it.

by:

Great ladder, easy to install due to clear instructions, pretty solid feel as you climb the ladder. However, it does flex a little bit; BUT, I am a 230lb guy, so I’m above average for the weight of someone climbing these things. The biggest room for improvement would be how it mounts to the roof. It’s essentially a small u-bracket, the pole for the ladder fits loosely in that, so the bars are extremely wobbly at the top as you get off or get on the ladder. Other than that, it’s awesome

by:

Your customer service and attention to details were outstanding a pleasure to do business with you picture of ladder enclosed thank you Brent/Kathleen

by:

Great ladder, great price, and easily installed. Fit adaptability (cut
to fit) was especially beneficial.

by:

I have cut the extended tubes on each 1/2 of ladder, so that the rungs are all 12" apart. This looks best. Then because the ladder is 1" too long I added a 1" x 2" x 24" rectangle of aluminum. This allowed me to fasten the alum. to my roof truss members. The next aspect of installing the 4qty. 5" long spacer off the walls will take some time as I need to install lumber into the walls where these 4 need to go. I am building this cargo trailer into a camper and my walls inside can be accessable yet. I'm a 35 year retired shop teacher and this installation cannot be installed easily at all by a regular Joe with few skills. I'm 230 #'s and I need it ALL done correctly, every screw has to go into something solid not just the walls of a camper/trailer. The metal on mine is .040 and this is thicker than the average trailer wall. It is still to thin for screws to fasten the ladder. The installation directions lack important facts and photos. Saying if you don't know where the solid members on the trailer are call your manufacturer. This is never going to work considering you might find one stud to fasten one set of the outreach supports but he other set is 12" away... these will not go into any member, just the camper wall. The ladder itself is 5/5. The directions are 3/5. What they expect you to do and find in your walls for supportting this ladder is a 1/5.

Prompt, painless delivery exactly as or dered.

Ladder was not an exact replacement, but was able to reuse the existing stand-off and mount it without modification. Excellent construction, looks and works great.

by:

I used this to add a ladder to my Scamp trailer, which has no straight sides and all rounded corners. This ladder is flexible enough to accommodate this installation. I like it. It feels sturdy and looks good.

Solid. Attractive. Convenient

by:

Heartland Bighorn 3580 RL bought in June of 2008. Ladder failed in two places. I was able to adapt LA 401 ladder by using the old extensions which were a bit longer than the ones that came with the LA 401. I also used the full extension of the LA 401. To make it fit better I took two steps off of the old ladder and placed them about 10 inches apart on either side of the swivels. I also secured the bottom of the ladder to the frame of a hitch I previously had installed.
There are always ways of working things out if you have a good product to work with. Included is a jpeg picture of completed project.

by:

Product arrived with simple directions and all the required parts. My application required placement on a round roof and I was able to cut the parts easily with a common hack saw. There was no issue. I even installed it on the side corner of a rear lounge trailer that had a huge picture window.

Great lightweight product that does exactly what it is advertised to do.

by:

Delivery was excellent. Instructions leave a lot to be desired but I was able to figure it all out. Went slow and read the instructions many times, including reading between the lines to put the support pegs on. I added a few extra supports to reinforce ladder to handle carrying two bikes.

Tom G.

10/27/2017

Mounted ladder quite simply and used additional braces I purchased. It has worked very well. Able to carry bikes on it on an older bike rack and it works well for that too.

by:

The ladder came quickly and was exactly as described. Great!. I had backed too close to the garage, (the devil made me do it) and crushed the ladder on my Jayco. Only was damaged in the upper end, top 3 feet. Cheapest way to repair the ladder was to cut off the upper part and use that portion of the new ladder to replace the crushed part. Worked well. I will say the replacement isn't as strongly built as the original ladder but certainly will do the job, especially considering the reasonable cost. Very pleased indeed.

A year later, Ive gained a few pounds but this ladder has given good strong service all along. Good product.

by:

Ladder received as advertised: very good quality product, all parts as required, and adequate instructions. Installation without major problems by one not particularly mechanically inclined. I have not put it to the climb test yet; however it has a "rock solid" feel and looks really nice on our RV.

by:

I have purchased many items from etrailer. your service is tremendous and so are the products you sell.
The rv rear ladder was as described.
I use it to access the roof to sweep of the top of the slide out. I weigh 225 and the ladder is solid and was fairly easy to install.

by:

the ladder fit perfectly with removing about 6 inches of the rails to custom fit my 5th wheel. I sold the trailer shortly after the install but I know the folks who purchased it and they have made no complaints about it.
Good product for the money.

  • Recommended Ladder for Use with a 2017 NorthStar 950SC Truck Bed Camper
Since ladders tend to be a universal fit you will want to measure your popup camper to first see how long of a ladder that you want. I have attached a link to our selection of ladders for you to choose from, but I recommend going with the Lippert Components 99-1/2" Tall Ladder, part # LA-401 for Silver or part # LA-401BA for Black. The reason that I recommend this ladder above the other options is because it can be cut for a custom fit. Even if 99-1/2" is too much you can simply cut it.
