Correct Spring Bars for Reese WDH for 6,000-7,000 Pound Trailer

Updated 04/04/2023 | Published 04/03/2023

Question:

Hello, I bought a trailer that included a Reese distribution trunnion hitch I was hoping to use if adequate or at least try before buying the correct model. I have a few part numbers, WD is 124184, head is 113802, and trunnion spring bars are 600lb/10,000lb max trailer weight. My truck is a 2018 F150, my trailer weight is 6000lbs or 7000lbs depending on what car is loaded. Could I purchase 800lb trunnion spring bars or do you think 600 would be ok?

Expert Reply:

For a proper setup, you want the spring bar rating to match the tongue weight of the trailer. 600 lb spring bars are not going to be rated high enough. The tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so you're right at the top of the range or over depending on the car you load and how it is loaded.

The # RP22225 would be a better choice since the tongue weight range is 400-800 lbs. Still, I recommend measuring your tongue weight with a scale like the # e99044 to be sure. If you're over the 800 lb limit the weight distribution system will not be effective and you may be better off with the # RP66009 which has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs.
