Is the license plate and lights attachment needed for this? How akward/heavy is this to take on and off the hitch?

The license plate bracket item # Y74VR isn't needed or required to use the Yakima EXO Swing Away Carrier and Cargo Box item # Y94ZR but it is recommended to avoid any potential traffic stops. You're not supposed to block your rear license plate so you may run into an issue depending on what state you're in or traveling through.

The Yakima EXO Swing Away item # Y74VR weighs 142 lbs so you are going to want some help installing and removing it from your vehicle. The cargo box is 23" long x 60" wide x 16" tall so it alone is pretty awkward. If you remove the ski carrier and cargo box the frame of the system weighs right at 100 lbs.
