Question:

The motorhome came with a 6 way round. My boat trailer is a 7 way pin. I had everything but brake lights and I wasn’t able to back up with surge brakes. I wired in a 7 way female on the motorhome and still no brakes but able to back up with surge brakes. There was one wire on motorhome that is for brakes but on all the wiring diagrams the turn signals are connected to brake lights…. So here is what I did hoping this would solve my problem, I added two wires to the single brake wire on the motorhome. One wire went to left turn and one went to right turn . I now have brake lights, tail lights but when I turn on right or left turn signal both right and left flash. Doesn’t matter between right or left they both flash…. I know this is a simple fix but I can’t wrap my head around this…. Some say it’s German engineering and the canbus system but I obviously need some help…. Jason

I have included images for the wiring of a 6-Pin and 7-Pin trailer connector. The 7-pin has separate turn signal and brake light wires than on a 6-pin where these wires are combined. I know you said that you have already converted your vehicle end to a 7-pin but the easiest solution would be to convert the trailer to a 6-Pin with a new Connector # PK11604. This will mean combining the tail light wiring to operate as turn signals and brake lights.

If you wish to keep the 7-pin connector on your motorhome the Curt 2 to 3 Wire Tail Light Converter # C56196 is going to be needed on your motorhome. This will connect to the turn signal/brake light wiring on your existing 6-pin wiring and will separate the brake lights from the turn signal wiring for the 7-way wiring. This will keep the tail light wiring on the trailer separate turn signals from brake lights.
