Why Does 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility have Lower Towing Capacity

Updated 08/15/2022 | Published 08/13/2022

Question:

I am trying to f d out the real towing capabilities for a 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility… They seem ridiculously low for some reason 2000lb. There’s not much point to that… yet you have a hitch for it rated for more than double.

As someone who owns a Tahoe PPV and went through same situation I can shed some light on this. The reason the towing capacity of your 2016 Ford Explorer Interceptor is so much lower is the gear ratio in the differential. It's a numerically lower number which means less mechanical advantage at slower speeds but a higher top speed. This is helpful in high speed chases but really hurts the "torque" of the vehicle that gets trailers moving. This is why the hitches that fit your vehicle like the # 76034 have much higher towing capacities than needed. I've also attempted to tow at the capacity of my Tahoe which is considerably lower than the non-police versions and it was really struggling.
