Ram OEM Brake Controller Issues With Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brakes

Updated 06/17/2025 | Published 08/11/2022

Question:

Hi I have a 2022 ram 3500 with oem brake controller. I recently bought a new trailer and noticed the brakes weren’t working as much and the emergency brake wouldn’t work at all. One I got home noticed a leak on one side of the trailer tires and removed the hub and saw oil all over the brake pad and inside the drum. So I replaced the wheel seal. I started driving and noticed my brakes were working better. Once I stopped I tried checking my emergency brakes with my oem controller and they don’t work. When I pull the pin they lock up fine. My friend connected his truck to my trailer and it did the same it didn’t work. So I connect my truck to his trailer and everything worked. Do you think it has something to do with the trailer wires?

It sounds like you need the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module # HBA-CAM for the OEM brake controller on your 2022 Ram 3500. This will ensure that your controller works properly with the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HBA16 as often times factory controllers do not work correctly with electric over hydraulic brakes.

I am having the same issue but the part you recommended states it is for Ford and Chevy brake controllers?? Does it also work on the Dodge controller?

@Stacy Yes, the Adapter Module # HBA-CAM will also work on your Dodge factory controller.

@BudM thank you! And this will get my EOH brakes to work? They worked just fine with my old Dodge that had an aftermarket controller but when I got this one, I cannot get them to work.

@Stacy It may solve your problem but you may want to have your brake controller programming verified by a local dealer. Since these are tied into the ECU if there is an issue with the ECU programming that could be all it takes.

@Jose Is your OEM brake controller in your Ford F-550 set to Electric over Hydraulic?

@Jose You're welcome. Yeah we don't see many errors with factory brake controllers on the 2015 Ford trucks. You'll want to make sure whatever brake controller you're using has an Electric over Hydraulic setting. The OEM brake controller can be adjusted by the settings menu behind the steering wheel.
