Question:
I have a tandem boat trailer with dual 7,000 lb electric brakes. Can I convert to disk breaks and if so what are my options. My brakes appear to be 12” x 2”. The plate attaching my brakes is a 5 bolt pattern. I can send pictures also.

Hi Rick; thanks for the question and the info you provided, and the answer is yes, you can absolutely convert from electric brakes to disc brakes. Disc brakes give you the best overall stopping power, so it's something I definitely recommend. For a 7,000 lb axle and a 5-bolt mounting flange I highly recommend DeeMax brakes:
- DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE53YR
You'll need two of the # DE53YR for your tandem axle trailer, and the reason I like DeeMax is not only their superior rust resistance - they have a salt spray rating of over 1,000 hours - but also their unique design. DeeMax uses drainage holes in the rotor that disperses water quickly and also vents heat faster than other brakes. If I was converting to disc brakes on my boat trailer, this is exactly what I would go with.
Then along with the brakes you'll also need brake line kits of the appropriate length - the 15' # 15TA-BLKIT or 20' # 20TA-BLKIT, as well as a disc brake actuator like the 20k Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop and Electric Lockout # DM8204311.
