How To Measure Tongue Weight On My Car Trailer

Updated 04/26/2022 | Published 04/25/2022

Question:

Im trying to get the right setup for towing. I have a 2009 dodge ram 3500. Class 5 hitch 2 1/2 receiver, with a 36 inch extension to clear my 11.5 bed camper. I would like to add a weight distribution hitch so i can pull my car trailer with a jeep on it. Trailer is about 5000 lbs total. I will be getting my tongue scale soon but how can i figure out the total tongue with the camper??

When It comes to using a weight distribution while towing a trailer using The Hitch Box Extension and Reducer for Titan 2-1/2" Trailer Hitches, 24 inch - 34 inch Long # RP45292 I would recommend The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 pounds GTW, 800 pounds TW # FA92-00-0800. The tongue weight is generally a little over 10% of the gross towing weight which would put your trailers tongue weight around 600 pounds.

When using a weight distribution system you need to be as close as possible of the gross trailer weight so you can get the best possible ride out of your weight distribution system. If you go any higher or anything lower that can be more dangerous and cause more sway.

Everything is included in the Fastway e2 # FA92-00-0800 except The 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball - 1-1/4 inch Diameter x 2-3/4 inch Long Shank - Chrome - 20,000 pounds # 63840.
