Question:

I have a 2016 Chevy Tahoe LT with standard suspension and a 2021 GulfStream Amerilite 189DD travel trailer. I had pulled this previously with a V6 Equinox with a simple hitch, no WD or sway control. Now with the Tahoe, I will at least need to get a lowered ball mount. Do you have an opinion about upgrading to a WD hitch, and which would you recommend for 3500 lb trailer 3000 lb dry with a tongue weight of around 400 lb.

If the rear of your 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe sags, you are experiencing sway, or you are finding it difficult to steer or stop, I would recommend using a weight distribution hitch. It is also recommended if your trailer weight is more than 50% of your vehicle's GVWR but in this case that is not true.

For a weight distribution hitch for your 2021 GulfStream Amerilite 189DD Travel Trailer I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0600. When it comes to a WDH, tongue weight is the most important factor. The Fastway is rated for 250-600 lbs of tongue weight, so you will fall right in the middle which is perfect. This system will keep you level and also prevent sway using 2-point sway control. You will also need # EQ91-00-6080 for a 2" ball or # EQ91-00-6100 for a 2-5/16" ball, and the # ALL643216 for installation.

Ultimately it is up to you, but I think you will find a big improvement in your ride if you install a WDH. It will also make a big difference if you're towing on windy days. If you want to just get a ball mount with a drop like the # AMSC6 you looked at, I recommend making sure you measure first so you choose the right one.
