Will the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack Work With a Rooftop Tent
Updated 06/12/2025 | Published 08/26/2021 >
Question:
Do you think this rack would work with a 165 lb roof top tent with two people at 330 lbs combined? Thanks

The Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack part # MPG217 has a 165 lb weight capacity. In regards to rooftop tent carrier compatibility, you'll need to refer to the rooftop tent manufacturer. Take the Yakima SkyRise HD Tent for Roof Rack Crossbars part # Y07436 for example. It has a 400 lb weight capacity but it only requires that the roof rack be rated for 165 lbs as it uses the integrated ladder for additional support.

The correct answer is "NO. Do not use them for a rooftop tent." The total static weight for these bars is 350 lbs, a fact that Malone does not divulge anywhere in their literature. The reason I know is that there was a Reddit discussion about a pair of the Airflow 2 bars bending when used with a rooftop tent. The discussion started contacted alone and got this response: "The Load Capacities associated with our Airflow2/Fixed Racks: Dynamic Load Capacity - 165lbs Static/Standing Load Capacity - 350lbs" ".... we do not typically recommend it for rooftop tents." What Malone DOES divulge is that they will not honor the warranty if the secret weight limit is exceeded or their use does not comply with their secret list of what constitutes proper usage. I will be ditching these ASAP. You need to reach out to Malone, not the tent manufacturer. I will be replacing mine as soon as possible.
