Where To Connect Red Wire Of Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty To 2016 Kia Sorento W/ Adaptive Cruise Control

Question:

I have a 2016 Kia Sorento SXL V6 and am putting on a tow package. It has the factory tow package pre-wiring. My question relates to finding the correct brake wire to use. In the manual of the Redarc Liberty, they are specific about which wire to use. For a CANBUS system which I believe this vehicle is you are to use a wire that is truly a brake light trigger, not necessarily the one that comes off of the brake pedal switch. Our Sorento does have the adaptive cruise control so my assumption is that if I wire into the brake light switch, the trailer brakes will NOT work while using the cruise control. Do you have any insight as to which wire might be the correct one to us in this application? I have to assume this would apply to ANY brake controller put on a modern vehicle with a CANBUS system, not just the Redarc. Thank you.

I would be happy to help!

You are correct that on vehicles like your 2016 Kia Sorento you will not want to get the brake light signal directly from the stop light switch. Picking up the signal there will only activate the trailer brakes when you press the brake pedal, and not when the adaptive cruise control you have applies the brakes.

Instead to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR you were looking at you will need to route the red wire to the 3rd brake light of your Sorento as there it will get the brake signal when you apply the brakes, or a system like the adaptive cruise control applies the brakes. When doing this you will also need to add the Redarc Encapsulated Power Diode for Tow-Pro Brake Controllers # RED34FR to prevent back feed to the wiring and controller.

I included videos of the products mentions for you to take a look at.
