Solution to Prevent Damaging Friction Pads of Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System

Updated 05/06/2021 | Published 05/05/2021

Question:

When using the spring bar tool to remove a bar from its bracket, one side of the friction pad separated and broke off. The travel trailer has less than 50 miles of towing time on it. It had been adjusted to achieve a high level of resistance torque to control my trailer sway and though the trailer jack was used to minimize resistance, the spring bar tool is still needed to remove the bars and popped off the friction pad. Is there a limit to how high the trailer jack can be raised to reduce tension, allowing bars to be taken off easier ? Otherwise, I see this being a reoccurring issue, and at $150 a pop, Ill be staying home more often.

The solution to preventing the friction pads part # RP58527 from damaging with the spring bar removal tool is the trailer jack like you mentioned. You shouldn't be using the tool to pull the bars down with that much tension. It's hard to say if and where the limit for using the trailer jack would be but getting the jack high enough to remove the tension is what you need to do.
