Can Trailer Hitch Receiver Be Modified To Increase Maximum Tongue Weight Rating
Updated 12/31/2020 | Published 12/30/2020 >
Question:
can a class three hitch be upgraded or modified to carry more tongue weight once installed?
asked by: Spencer R
Expert Reply:
A trailer hitch receiver can not be modified to increase the maximum tongue weight rating of the trailer hitch receiver. Modifying the receiver will void the manufacturer warranty and could cause a safety issue.
For example the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13342 you were looking at has a maximum tongue weight of 350lbs and a maximum trailer weight rating of 3500lbs. If you are planning on towing you could use a weight distribution system to slightly increase the capacity of the hitch to a maximum tongue weight of 400lbs, and a maximum trailer weight of 4000lbs.
Keep in mind that the maximum tongue weight rating of a trailer hitch receiver is limited to the lowest weight rating between the hitch and the vehicle. For example even though the Curt # 13342 has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 350lbs, or 400lbs if using a weight distribution hitch, if your vehicle has a maximum tongue weight rating of 300lbs you will only have a maximum tongue weight capacity of 300lbs.
You can find the maximum tongue weight rating of your vehicle by checking in the towing section of your owners manual or by contacting your local dealership.
