On your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport Trail the connector needed to plug in a brake controller install harness is behind the black cover located to the left of the steering column just above the carpet. Check out the attached picture to see how you'll find it.
For a brake controller the Brake EVN part # TK63VR is a really great option. It uses an inertia sensor to sense how hard you are applying the vehicle brakes to decide how hard to apply the trailer brakes and also is priced really great and reliable.
