How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we'll be installing the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, part number TK90160. We'll install this in conjunction with the Tekonsha Plug and Play Direct Fit Wiring Harness, part number 3045-P. The Primus IQ Brake Controller is ideal for one to three braking axles. Some of the features here of our brake controller, here on top we can go through four different modes of brake boost, setting up four different applications. Then the blue wheel here on the side will adjust the gain, up or down, for how much power we'll supply to the trailer braking. Now if we're in an application where we need to activate the trailer braking without touching the vehicle's brake pedal we'll simply use the slide to send power to the trailer braking. Here's our direct fit wiring harness.

The gray end will match up with the manufacturer's gray plug when plugged directly into it. Then once plugged in we'll go ahead and route the remaining portion of our harness over to where we'll be mounting the brake controller. Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components, such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal, or even possibly the steering column when routing your wire. Now as we route the wiring harness we'll go ahead and take the zip ties and secure it as necessary. To mount the brake controller we'll use the bracket and hardware provided with the brake controller kit.

We're going to be using the metal bracket along with the pre-drilled holes here in the side of the brake controller to secure it. Now, once we have the four fasteners started we'll go ahead and run them down. Then with the brake controller mounted we'll go ahead and take the plugin of our wiring harness and plug it in to the back of the brake controller. As we plug it in we can see we have power and it's flashing NC for no connection. Next, I'll go ahead and plug in my trailer wiring, and we'll get a solid C showing that our trailer brake wiring is connected. There you have it for the install of the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller for one to three braking axles, part number TK90160, in conjunction with the Tekonsha Direct Fit Wiring Harness, part number 3045-P, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
