  • Plug-in wiring adapter allows for quick, simple installation of your electric trailer brake controller

    • Custom connector end plugs into the built-in port beneath the dash of your vehicle
    • Other end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

To install your electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

The connector is behind the black cover located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Brake Controller 3014-P Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 3014-P, this is the Tekonsha custom wiring adapter for trailer brake controllers. This is going to fit a variety of deep applications, so to make sure that this is a fit for your vehicle you can use the vehicle fit guide right here on our website. This unit is going to require your vehicle to have a factory wiring harness. The plug in wiring adapter is going to allow for quick, simple installation of your electric trailer brake controller. A great advantage to a system like this is that you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any wires. The custom connector right here on this end, custom designed for your vehicle, it's going to plug into the built-in port beneath the dash of your vehicle. This other end is going to plug into the back of your electric brake controller. The great advantage is that you can quickly and easily disconnect and connect from the brake controller any time that you want to. This unit is going to be compatible with time delayed and proportional brake controllers from TrailerMate, Draw-Tite and Tekonsha. Keep in mind that the brake controller must have a built-in port for the adapter to connect, it will not work on controllers with pigtail wiring harnesses. I have a Tekonsha brake controller here today just to show you how easy this connection can be made.

This is what the port is going to look like on the back of your brake controller. Simply just take the flat end of the adapter, place it into that port till it snaps into place and it's fully connected. The only other need would be is to connect this port to the build-in port under the dash of your vehicle. To disconnect from the brake controller it's got this little tab, all you have to do is lift up on it and then wiggle it loose and it disconnects really easily. The wiring is going to have this mesh protector that goes around it, that's just going to keep the wires together, making sure that they're not hanging loose near the pedals of your vehicle or behind the dash. That's going to do it for our review of part number 3014-P, this is the Tekonsha custom wiring adapter for trailer brake controllers. .

The pictures and videos on your site gave me the confidence to try this myself. I even improved upon the install showed on the website. The install took me less than 15 minutes, and by removing the small pocket " drawer" in the dash, a very low profile and smooth look was retained. My local post office was undermanned and late with the product and customer service was excellent in helping me track it down. I saved over $160 compared to what local retail establishments were quoting me... excellent job all around. Thanks for exceeding all of my expectations. 390376

Wiring harness is the way to go. Installed on a new 2019 Jeep Cherokee and wouldn't want to be splicing wires with all the electronics on the new vehicles. Getting to the tow package plug was difficult, since I was uncertain of pulling/pushing to hard on the service plug in, the dealers service dept. was nice enough to remove the panel for me. It took them two tries to identify where the plug in was (with a trip to the PC to find the diagram) then a headstand under the dash to reach it (it was clipped into the wiring block somehow, not taped to the wires). Once it was in place, one zip tie completed the installation. 730946

This brake controller works fantastic! It’s everything I needed for the electric brakes on my travel trailer hauled behind my Jeep Cherokee. Being able to easily adjust for varying weight and driving conditions is awesome. Installation is neat in appearance, but the vehicle’s mating harness was a b****h to reach. 706911

Worked perfectly. Easy to install. Only had to remove one screw under the dash and was able to bend the lower panel back enough to find the pigtail plug which was attached to the floor with a retaining bracket. I coaxed the plug out of the bracket and plugged the Jeep-specific connector into it relatively easily. To complete the connection I routed the wires through the left side tray in the dash where I plugged into the brake controller. 287068

2016 Jeep Cherokee

Just installed this item on my 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4x4. I have the original Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. First off, that factory plug: After you take the single screw off the panel above the driver's left foot, the is still a two inch plastic "finger" in a metal bracket still holding the panel up. Pull the panel toward you and bow the middle down to free the "finger." Also, the factory plug was not just dangling on my Cherokee as some on-line pictures seem to show. It’s in a soft plastic "keeper," so I did not recognize it right away. It is easy to pry out of the keeper with a small screwdriver. There is not much room on the right side of the steering wheel by the driver's knees, plus there is a knee air bag there you do not want to impede. So, I installed my controller (with the pocket mount attached) in the utility bin on the left side, above the hood release. The utility bin pops out and it's easy to fish the plug up to the opening created. I cut a hole in the back of the utility bin for the plug to go through, then popped the bin back in place. Put the plug through the empty pocket mount and plugged it into the controller. I snapped the controller into the pocket mount, then set that assemblage into the bin. It fits nice and snug side-to-side. I drilled two small holes near the rubber bumpers at the top of the bin opening and used a small bungee cord to hold the bin up against the controller, hooking the bungee ends into the holes. This keeps the brake controller secure. I still have plenty of knee clearance getting in and out and can easily see and reach the controller. If I remove the controller during the off-season, the utility bin will close fully with the controller plug inside. Another option is to remove the utility bin altogether and improvise a controller mount in the cavity created. That would work for other controllers and take up even less knee room. 261087

Still working great. Removed during the off-season and reinstalled in 5 minutes this spring.

  • I did not find your order based on your email address, but if you have a Tekonsha or Draw-Tite brake controller you will use wiring adapter # 3014-P. • Yes, the factory brake controller port should be in that general area (behind the black cover located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet) on your 2015 Jeep Cherokee but only if it came with the factory tow package. If it did not then the plug might not be there at all. It is possible that it is tucked up more under the dash or even further to the left considering how your Jeep Cherokee is equipped.
