The Pilot Automotive Bully Black Bull Adjustable Side Steps - Aluminum w/ Matte Black Powder Coat - 9" Step - 1 Pair # BBS-1101S-2 attach to the rocker panels at the pinch weld just like all other steps and running boards. This step is a fit for many trucks but unfortunately not for the 1971 Chevy C/K series pickup you have in your fit guide. It will only fit 1973 models and newer according to the manufacturer however they have only tested Ford trucks for that 1971 model year so it is likely it will fit and just hasn't been confirmed.
The rectangular brackets help with support and spacing as well as mitigating corrosion. I recommend hitting the drilled holes with some spray paint to seal the bare metal before continuing the install which does take some extra time but I think it is worth it. The overall length of the step is 13-3/4 inches and they are adjustable for your desired ground clearance.
For your truck the only confirmed fit we have is the Aries Round Nerf Bars - 3" Diameter - Black Powder Coated Steel # AA204036 or the Polished Stainless Steel # AA204036-2. I've attached a video of the longer bar version of this on a newer truck so you can see the installation.
