we purchased a RV that had a blue ox braking system. we did not get the brake away cable with it as it was still attached to his vehicle will the brake system work with out this attached

I'm assuming you have a Blue Ox Patriot Braking System like the # BLU37TR. If that's the case, you'll need part # BRK2505 which includes the break away switch, the coiled lanyard and the wiring harness that connects the switch to the brake unit. I've linked to a video showing a typical install.
