Question:
our 2018 trailhawk has the 4pin-7pin connectors and hitch all pre-installed, but should the Brake Controller wiring harness also be pre-installed somewhere under the dash? cheers

If you check behind the black cover located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet you should find the connector that your looking for on your 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.
If you don't already have a brake controller I highly recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR which connects to that plug using the adapter # 3014-S.
The Tow-Pro Elite is the best for your application because the only thing that is added to your dash/console area is the small dial used for adjusting your trailer brakes. It also has proportional and user-control braking action which puts you in the most control of your trailer no matter what kind of terrain you are towing over.
I have attached a review video that you can check out.
