Question:
Pulling with 2008 F-250 equiped with the tow command system/controler. Trailer is equipped with surge brakes. Plan on replacing all brakes and keeping existing hubs. Considering electric over Hydraulic actuatior but am not sure if those actuators work with a surge brake set up. Do not want to purchase only to get it here in Hawaii only to find that it is not compatible. What are your recommendations for this situation?

Expert Reply:
The HydraStar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes, # HBA16, will work with the surge brake system on your trailer, assuming your trailer has disc brakes. If your trailer has drum brakes, then you will want to use the HydraStar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes, # HBA-10.
You will attach the brake line from your surge coupler to the fitting on the HydraStar system. This will allow the brakes to activate based on an electrical signal that is sent to the HydraStar system, rather than the action of the surge coupler. The fitting on the HydraStar system is compatible with 3/16 inch brake line. If your brake lines are larger than 3/16 of an inch, then you will need a fitting to adapt the brake line size down to 3/16 of an inch. These can be found at a local automotive or hardware store.
You will also need to pick up the Control Adapter Module, # HBA-CAM, to make this system compatible with the brake controller in your 2008 Ford F-250 and the HydraStar Break-Away Kit and Battery, # HBA-EBA. Without the control adapter module, this system will not work with your tow command brake controller.
You will also want to disable your surge coupler to prevent the coupler from moving or replace it with a standard coupler.
