Electric Over Hydraulic Disc Brake Set Up For a 12' Dump Trailer

Published 07/14/2020

Question:

The brake line fitting on the calipers. What size fitting is it? Male or female? Also on the dexter actuator does it require any additional adapter to use on a 2014 Ford 250?

Your 2014 F-250 may or may not require an adapter. HydraStar states only the (2007 - 2008) Ford F-250 requires it however, in some late model trucks it can be hit or miss. If the factory brake controller isn't putting out enough voltage then it will not see there is a trailer with brakes connected and the brakes will not work on the trailer. There are two options in this case. Adding a second brake controller inside the vehicle or I recommend HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module for Ford and Chevy Brake Controllers Item # HBA-CAM. This adapter module is less intrusive than an aftermarket brake controller inside the vehicle because it mounts on the trailer and is wired with the actuator.

On a 12' dump trailer using Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 13" Hub/Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - Dacromet - 7,000 lbs Item # K2HR712D will require an actuator with at least 1500 psi for the brakes to function properly. I recommend Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi Item # K71-651

The calipers have a female fitting to connect the brake line which are 1/8" NPT to 3/16" FIF. Replacement Adapter Port for Kodiak Disc Brake Calipers and Solenoid Valves Item # K22590A

I also recommend Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Single Axle - 18' Item # 18SI-BLKIT. This kit is much easier to deal with than the hard lines when installing and you don't have to worry about the potential corrosion aspect with rubber lines.

It is also recommended to use 40 Amp In-Line Circuit Breaker - Perpendicular Mount Bracket Item # 9510 when wiring the actuator to the trailer plug to protect the vehicle wiring.
