In regards to the Replacement Clamp Assembly for Yakima SlimShady Roll-Out Awning part # 8880737, the handle on the side of the unit is used to tighten the c-shaped clamps around the crossbar. The rubber inserts inside the c-shaped clamps are then used to prevent the crossbar from moving around. In regards to how it attachs to the awning you will need the Replacement Mounting Bracket for Yakima SlimShady Roll-Out Awning part # 8880736. I have attached a few photos that will hopefully clarify what it is you are asking.
