How To Carry A Cargo Carrier and Tow A Trailer At The Same Time

Updated 10/02/2025 | Published 10/11/2019

Question:

Is it possible to tow an additional trailer behind a cargo carrier? Can an additional receiver be added to allow towing of a small wheeled trailer behind the cargo carrier? Could I use a cargo carrier with a ramp?

It is possible to carry a cargo carrier like part # e98874 and tow a trailer with a vehicle but not in tandem. You would need to use a Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount part # D210 to carry the cargo carrier in the top receiver and then tow the trailer with the ball mount portion like in the photo I attached. The only stipulation is the dual receiver does reduce the tongue weight rating of your hitch in half so you would want to keep that in mind. You also don't really want to use a cargo carrier with a ramp because you wouldn't really be able to use it with the cargo carrier in the top receiver.

Hi. Wouldn’t the carrier hit the trailer when turning?

@JohnD Hi there, great question! In most cases the cargo carrier won’t hit the trailer when turning, but it really depends on the size of your trailer and the style of carrier you’re using. Some smaller trailers sit closer to the hitch, so in a really tight turn the front of the trailer could get close to the back of the carrier. One way to check before purchasing is to measure: Measure from your hitch pin hole to the closest point on your trailer tongue/jack/coupler. Look at the carrier’s measurement from its hitch pin hole out to the back edge. If your trailer’s closest point sits further back than where the carrier would end, you should have the clearance you need. It’s not 100% perfect since turning angles change the space a little, but it gives you a really good idea before buying. And once you have it, doing a slow test turn in a safe spot like a parking lot is the best way to confirm everything clears. Let me know if you have anymore questions or need to know the measurements of a certain cargo carrier we carry.
