A single stage regulator like the MB Sturgis # 108072 you referenced will indeed work on either a 20 pound or 100 pound propane tank. It's important to note though that the regulator type is really dependent on the propane-powered appliance you're using and not necessarily the tank itself.

A dual-stage regulator like # 108221 will provide a more constant/consistent pressure for your appliance.
