Will Leaf Springs Flatten Over Time to Cause Trailer Lean
Updated 08/16/2019 | Published 08/15/2019 >
Question:
2016 Stryker 2512 Toy Hauler leaning to one side. Im trying to determine whether or not I have a bent axle or flattened leaf springs on one side as my TT leans a good 1/4-3/8 inch to one side. Ive measured from the top of the leaf spring plate to the frame on both side and there's roughly a 1/4 inch difference. This is after parking the trailer on a cement slab, backing it in tightly. Could the suspension be loaded still? Is there a way to determine if its a bad axle or worn leafs? Is a lean indicative of a bad axle or is it more likely that the leafs are flatter on one side? Thanks in advance.

The leaning that is occurring in your 2016 Stryker could be a number of issues, and you asked a good question about your leaf springs. Since these do flatten out (essentially elongating) over time, that could very well be the issue, but there is no way to definitively say what the issue is. The problem could also be other suspension components being worn out so the only way to truly determine what is causing the trailer to lean is to take it to a quality trailer repair shop and have them check out your suspension components. It may be that your axle is bent or it could be your springs have flattened or it's possibly the spindle or hub having issues. A decent shop will be able to take a look at your suspension and find out for sure.
If you plan on keeping your 2016 Stryker for some time, I highly recommend considering an upgrade to your leaf spring suspension with something like the Timbren Silent Ride Suspension for Tandem Axle Trailers w/ 3" Round Axles # TSR10KT02.
This system will absolutely be more reliable than a standard leaf spring system, won't flatten out, will distribute the weight more evenly, and give you a much more comfortable ride overall. You would only need to know what size your axles are, though they are likely 3" based on the 10,000 lb GVWR of your trailer.
I have added a number of links for you to check out: help articles on leaf spring suspension, a video review of the Silent Ride, and a link to our selection of leaf spring upgrades as well as standard leaf springs.
