Question:
Can I wire a trailer winch directly to the auxiliary power supply on the trailers 7-way plug?
asked by: Kevin
Expert Reply:
The 12-volt accessory circuit lacks the amperage to power a trailer mounted winch. Your best bet would be to either install a 12-volt deep cycle battery on the trailer, and use the 12-volt accessory circuit to keep that battery maintained, or use a winch wiring kit like part # BDW20348 and connect the winch to the vehicle battery.
If you use the 12-volt accessory circuit to maintain the trailer-mounted battery, I would recommend installing a battery isolator, like part # PK5231201. The isolator will deactivate the accessory circuit when the tow vehicle ignition is switched off, to prevent the battery on the tow vehicle from becoming accidentally discharged.
When shore power is available, use a battery charger like #CTEK56353 to charge the trailer battery when needed.
The diagram I provided will make the installation a bit clearer for you.
