If your side marker lights use 1 wire like the Thinline LED Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light # MCL67AB then you actually won't route a ground wire to them as they will ground through the mounting hardware. If you are finding a way to attached your white ground wire to these lights that only have 1 wire then that could very well be your problem.

Just make sure that the 1 wire is connected to your running light circuit and that they are connected to a clean, bare-metal surface for the mounting hardware to ground properly.
