The physical size of the tire won't have an effect on its endurance during storage but its quality certainly can. I'm not quite sure what brand tires you are using but I recommend taking a look at the Taskmaster 4.80R12 # TT48012C, which is the highest quality unit we have available in this size. This is a radial 6 ply tire that's constructed of double steel belts and double polyester cords with a nylon overlay to help prevent abnormal wear and lead to a long lifespan.

Besides the tire's quality the best way to prevent cracks like this during storage is what you have already been doing. I don't know what type of cover you tried before but I do recommend going with a black model such as the Adco Ultra Tyre Gard # 290-3975, as the darker color does a better job of absorbing the heat/UV rays before they get to the tire.

These a heavy-duty covers that will fit this tire size perfectly. I have attached a short video review that you can check out as well.
