When Should Trailer Tires Be Replaced And Is It Better to Use Higher Load Range Tires

Question:

Hello, I bought my 2012 27ft TT with original tires from a previous owner that didnt put a lot of miles on them. The tread is still great and they look fine, but Ive read I should replace them maybe since theyre going on 8 years old. Ive been to TN and SC from Ohio with them and havent had any issues. Also, they are LRC, is it worth increasing to LRD even if Im not over the LRC specifications for weight? Thanks

We typically recommend replacing trailer tires after 7 years, regardless of what kind of condition they appear to be in. On a trailer like yours that wasn't used too much before you bought it the tires are probably in much better shape than most 7 year old trailer tires but it's still a good idea to swap them out for new ones so you continue to have worry-free trips.

Going to a higher load range tire can technically lead to less chance of a blow-out, since the main cause for this on trailers is excessive heat. A tire that's supporting weight well under its limit might run a bit cooler on the highway compared to an alternative that's closer to its capacity. With that being said a trailer tire that's greatly over-rated can lead to a bumpy ride during travel.
