Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Tire/Wheel Combo to Replace 18.5 x 8.5-8 Tires on Snowmobile Trailer
The 18.5x8.5-8 is actually an old tire size that is not used much anymore. The closest metric size to your existing tire would be 215/60-8, which is what I would recommend. Your wheel most likely has a 5-on 4-1/4 inch bolt pattern (see link below), you will want to make sure that the bolt pattern of your existing wheels matches that of the replacement wheel. We offer a 215/60-8 load range C, 935 lb capacity tire on a white painted rim as part # AM3H200. When inflated to its 50 psi maximum...

  • Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes 165/65-8 and 4.80-8
The tire size 165/65-8 is .4 of an inch taller than the 4.80-8 tire size and fits a rim almost two inches wider. The sizes are very similar but the 165/65-8 size is a bit different. Either size tire requires a different width rim. We have replacements on rims like the part # AM3H200 for if you have a 4 bolt wheel or part # AM3H220 if you have a 5 bolt wheel.

  • Replacement Trailer Wheels and Tires for Water Bug Jet Ski Trailer
Thank you for the photo of your newly-acquired jet ski and Water Bug trailer. This shows that it uses 4-on-4 bolt pattern wheels. Your tire size 16.5 x 6.5-8 is the same as the metric size 165/65-8 and we have an item that will work for you. In this tire size and wheel bolt pattern we offer pre-mounted Kenda wheel/tire combination part # AM3H200. This consists of a white-powder-coat 4-on-4 wheel and a 165/65-8 bias ply tire. The combined product has a weight capacity of 800-lbs at the...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire and Wheel for Size 5.7-8 with 65 mph Speed Rating
Hey Jonathan, the next size up from what you have now that's not overly big and wide would be the 165/65-8 like the part # AM3H200 that is mounted on a 4 lug wheel or the part # AM3H220 that is mounted on a 5 lug wheel. This is rated for up to 65 mph which is probably pretty close to what you have now but you'd need to check. We don't have a tire near this size that is going to have a higher speed rating though. Worth mentioning is that there isn't a larger tire size that fits the rim...

  • Do You Carry a 6 Inch Wheel? Do You Have Something Smaller in Size that the Kenda 215/60-8 Tire?
Hello Ray, I do have an option for you that results in a smaller overall setup. Not because the wheel is smaller, but because the tire itself is. The smallest wheel we carry is an 8". I did a search for a 6" option, and the only thing that came up in my search was a wheelbarrow. So unfortunately, that's not going to help us here. From the picture you sent in, it looks like you currently have the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H300...

  • Is There a High-Speed Tire Replacement for a 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 Tire?
Hey Susan! The 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 tire size is an older model and was replaced with the 165/65-8 size. We have that in the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H200 but this is rated for 65 mph so you won't be increasing the safe speed by much (if at all). I can help you get a tire rated for a higher speed, but it will mean getting tires that are a bit larger than what you currently have. For example, the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H460...

  • What is the Smallest Overall Diameter Trailer Tire You Carry and What is the Speed Rating
The special trailer (ST) tires will have a maximum speed rating of 65 miles per hour, unless stated otherwise on the tire. It is not recommended to run a trailer tire at a higher speed than 65 miles per hour due to the heat buildup that will occur inside the tire and cause the tire to break down and cause the tire to fail. The smallest 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern tire and wheel we sell is Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Tire with 8 Inch Wheel, part # AM30020. It has an overall diameter of 16.1 inches. The...

  • Tire and Wheel Replacement Recommendation for a 4.80-8 with 4-Lug Bolt Pattern
For your application I recommend using the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H200 as it will be a little larger but not large enough to cause clearance issues like a tire that fits a 10" wheel would (the 10" wheels have tires almost double the width of what you currently have). The combo mentioned above has the 4-lug bolt pattern and is a load range C (800 lbs at 70 psi) so it will be a great fit to replace your current tires/wheels. If you are determined to use...

The highest rated 8 inch wheel/tire combo we offer would have an 'M' speed rating, which is good up to 81mph. This would be a 215/60-8 bias ply tire mounted on a 8 x 7 inch wheel with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. The tire has a C load rating, with a weight capacity of 940 lb per tire/1880 lb per axle. The wheel/tire combo is available with a white powder coated wheel as part # AM3H290 or a galvanized wheel as part # AM3H300. This is as close to 100mph that anything we offer would get.
