Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Great customer service and on time delivery :)

by:

Wheel/tire are good quality. Wheel was stamped with a manufacturing date of last month, so they weren't sitting in a warehouse for years waiting to be sold. I'll be buying these again. This wheel/tire combo was cheaper than buying just the tires from a local tire shop.

  • Larger Wheel/Tire Recommendation for 1997 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
We do indeed have wheel/tire combos that would provide a 175/80-13 inch tire on a white powder coated steel wheel with a 4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle. However, after closely examining the photo you kindly provided, I saw that you have what's referred to as a hub centric wheel. A hub centric wheel uses wheel bolts to fasten to the hub, not lug nuts. The wheel also gets a portion of its support from the portion of the hub protruding through the wheel. Because of this, you'll need a wheel...

  • Recommendation to Replace 20.5x8-10 Tires on Trailer
The modern equivalent to your existing 20.5x8-10 size tires is a 205/65-10 like the excellent Kenda Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H460. This will really be a direct replacement and it features the same diameter/height of 20-1/2 inches as your current set. This particular tire and wheel combo has a maximum load of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi and the white steel wheel features the needed 4 on 4 bolt pattern to match your hubs (based on the picture you attached). • Wider Tire Option to Replace 5.30-12 on Trailer
Hey Micah, the most similar trailer tire size to what you have now that's going to be significantly wider would be the 205/65-10 like the part # AM3H490 for if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern or the part # AM3H460 for if you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. These are going to be about 8 inches wide and have an 87 mph speed rating.

  • Can a 20.5x8x10 Tire Replace a 20x8.5x10 Tire
Hey Thomas, thanks for reaching out! You can definitely replace a 20x8.5x10 tire with a 20.5x8x10 tire, but I actually recommend using a 205/65-10 tire instead because it's a more common size and has replaced the older 20.5x8x10 size. I recommend going with the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 205/65-10 - Load Range E # AM1HP56 because it has a 1,650 lbs at 90 psi weight rating along with an 87 mph rating which makes it the best option for this size tire. If you're needing to replace...

  • Availability Of Wide Base Tires For A Walk Behind Tractor
Hello Greg, I am afraid that we do not offer a tire that will fit a 4 lug wheel and is also 10" wide or more. The closest thing we offer would be a 205/65-10 tire like part # AM3H460 which is about 8.4" wide and 20.4" in diameter. Or even a 215/60-8 tire that is 8.9" wide, but only 18.3" in diameter like part # AM3H290. From there, any wider tire would need to be on a 5 lug or 6 lug wheel. These 205/65-10 tires are a wider base tire like you are looking for but they are not necessarily...

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Wheel/Tire Combo for 1995 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
The modern tire size for the 20.5 x 8.0-10 tire is 205/65-10. The exact wheel and tire combo you need will depend on the wheel bolt pattern used by your pop-up (4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle, 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle or 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt circle) as well as the load rating needed. You'll want to choose a two wheel/tires with a combined between the two load rating greater than the GVWR of the pop-up. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating represents the maximum the pop-up can weigh...

  • Is There a High-Speed Tire Replacement for a 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 Tire?
Hey Susan! The 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 tire size is an older model and was replaced with the 165/65-8 size. We have that in the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H200 but this is rated for 65 mph so you won't be increasing the safe speed by much (if at all). I can help you get a tire rated for a higher speed, but it will mean getting tires that are a bit larger than what you currently have. Hello John, thanks for reaching out. We do offer some 10" 4 on 4 wheels with a 2.5" pilot hole such as part # AM20041. All of these are lug centric so this would not be a suitable replacement if your trailer is set up for hub centric wheels. The hub centric wheels are not as common these days so it might prove difficult to find a compatible wheel. I am not aware of a maker of 10" hub centric wheels, but there might be one out there. • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Upgrade From 215/60-8 Tires
In your case I do recommend going with the larger 205/65-10 tire size for a few reasons; you'll have a higher load rating and you'll have a higher speed rating. I will say it's important to make sure you have the tires filled to the proper psi rating on the sidewall of the tire. The photo you sent in looks like you have the tires overinflated which is why you're seeing that wear in the middle of the tread. • Upgrading the Tire and Wheel on a Harbor Freight Trailer
From what I could find, the Harbor Freight trailers do say not to exceed 45 miles per hour in the owners manual. That being said, the tires they use are not rated very high and may be the limiting factor. The trailer you have looks to use a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern and 12 inch wheels. I definitely suggest upgrading what you have to the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 # AM31199DX. This, as with all 12 inch tires, will be limited to 65 miles per hour, but this is also rated up to 1,220 pounds...

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation To Replace 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tires and Wheels
For the 20.5x8x10, the new size is a 205/65-10. This would be the better tire for the long drives you plan on because it is a wider tire that will offer more stability. You can also get higher load capacities with the wider tire in this case if needed. I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP56, for just a tire. This tire has a load capacity of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. It is designed to fit on 10 by 6 inch rims. Trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum psi rating...

The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range E # AM3H460 don't have a suggested torque value. The torque is based on lug bolt stud diameter and the lug nut type. I've attached a chart to assist. most of the 4 on 4 inch hubs will have a 1/2 inch diameter lug bolt and a coned lug nut so they would be torques between 75 and 85 foot lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, I recommend using the Powerbuilt Digital Torque Adapter - 1/2" Drive # ALL940962....

You will want to make sure you have at least 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender, but if you have the ability to modify the fender, this should not be much of an issue. You can also stick with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern if you like, but swapping that to the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern will allow for even more options. You can use spacer blocks to get more ground clearance with torsion axles on trailers. If your axles are Dexter axles there are lift kits available. Typically, people use 2 inch by 3 inch, or 2 inch by 4 inch steel tubing with 3/16 or 1/4 inch wall thickness. This can throw off your trailer geometry as the trailer will now become more top heavy. Another potential benefit is that a larger tire and wheel will most likely have a larger load capacity. Keep in mind though...
