Question:
Hello, I have 10k lb Dexter axles that I need to convert from oil bath to grease. I have read some of the QandAs on this subject on your website and it seems like an easy change. Is there a different bearing seal that would be needed after changing from oil bath to grease? If Im not mistaken, the seals that came with the axles are the 10-51 part numbers. Im not sure if that is correct or if the 10-56 are the right ones. Or maybe there is a grease seal version that would work better? Thank You for your time.

Expert Reply:
Oil seals will work just fine in a grease hub. Oil requires a tighter seal to keep from leaking due to the penetrating nature of oil and the fact it's more of a liquid than grease so an oil seal will be more than adequate.
When going from oil to grease you really don't have to change anything as the oil seals and threaded dust covers are perfectly compatible with grease as well.
The most heavy duty grease we offer is the LMX red grease like part # L11390 which will be your best option when making the conversion.
