The correct Tekonsha T-One Harness for your 2012 Ford Escape without the factory tow package is the part # 118551. If this is what you have installed then there are a couple of things you will want to look at.
Please just let me know if I'm wrong but it sounds like it's the lights on your Escape that aren't working properly with the harness installed and not the trailer lights. The first thing I recommend checking is the hot lead that should be run up to the Escape's battery via the included fuse holder. This connection is what allows for enough power to activate the trailer lights so make sure it is secure.
If this is good then you will want to make sure the connections behind the tail lights are fully seated. It might be worth it just to unplug and re-connect these just to make sure.
If the problems still persist please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
