I want to make sure this winch goes in both forward and reverse. Does it? Also I have an older model DL1100. Is the 1100A the same thing?

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL15103 is indeed the correct replacement for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Model DL1100 that you have now. This winch will ratchet to retrieve the load and then there is a free wheel feature that allows you to pull line out once you disengage the pawl. If you wanted a winch to both retrieve and let out under load you would want a brake winch instead, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake part # DL14934.
