Question:
I have an Atwood 85778 actuator .I recently purchased free backing brakesAKFBBRK 35D .I also purchased Demco actuator 8605001 which I was told would be a good replacement choice for the Atwood ,however it is 5” longer .Would It have been better to have purchased brake actuator #84132 with brake lockout ,which is the same length 14” as my original ,also would it work with a free backing system.I would prefer to go with the 84132 if it is compatible with my brakes. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Helpful Expert Reply:
Your Demco Actuating Coupler # 8605001 to replace your Atwood coupler is a great choice even though it is 5 inches longer. As long as you have the 3 inch wide channel tongue and the 6,000 lb capacity is adequate for your trailer it will work just fine. The length of the coupler won't really change the tongue weight or anything else, so no need to be concerned. The newest version of the # 8605001 is the # DM72VR.
It will work perfectly with free-backing brake assemblies like # AKFBBRK-7 which are made to engage the same way as usual when traveling forward, but won't engage when reversing. There is no lockout (electric or manual) needed on this surge coupler when you have the free-backing brakes.
Any surge coupler with your required weight capacity and 3 inch tongue compatibility will work with your trailer. Unfortunately the 84132 has been discontinued after Atwood was bought out.
