Surge Brake Coupler Recommendation for a 1988 MAGIC Model MT Boat Trailer

Question:
I have a 88 MAGIC Model MT Boat trailer gross wt 3500 lb. Our trailer service shop put on a Atwood 85778 coupling with brakes. Almost immediately after putting it in service I found that the latch on the top used to close the coupling on the ball would not close. And if you were able to somehow get it closed after prying it for 20 min then you could never get it open again. Apparently the rust or corrosion prevented the mechanism from closing. I went back to the dealer after a couple of years of having to lash the hitch to the ball and had him put on a new one. The new one stopped working within a month of installation before I put the boat in the water for the first time. It appears to me that the Titan model has a mechanism for closing on the ball that should be much better than the Atwood. What do you recommend. Thanks.

The Dexter Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 is the replacement for the Titan Leverlock actuator that you referenced. This replacement option by Dexter who bought out Titan is a stronger coupler with many similar components. This actuator has a new latch system that fits 2 inch trailer hitch balls. It will be a significant upgrade from your Atwood actuator.
