Speed Rating for ST Trailer Tires

Question:
I just read that the ST rating for a trailer tire stands for special trailer . It also says max speed is always 65 for an ST tire. Is that true?

Expert Reply:
ST on a tire does stand for Special Trailer and is the style of tire you should always use on a trailer wheel. 65 mph is a very common speed rating for an ST tire but here lately we are seeing that number increase. It used to be nearly all were 65 mph rated but now 81 mph is a very common rating too. Especially on the larger sizes.
For example, the ST215/75R14 # TTWTR21514 that you referenced has an 81 mph speed rating.
I attached a review video for this tire as well as a help article with frequently asked questions for trailer tires.
