Question:

1997 GMC Savana Van. My van is a heavy duty 2500 savana , the holes are 40 inches center to center and 4 inches apart , what are the dimensions for this hitch ?

The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98861 will fit your 1997 GMC Savana so long as it is a cargo or passenger van model; if you take a look at the photo of the dimensions of this hitch you can see that the bolt holes are also 40" apart like you said yours were.

I have added a link to a video of a similar hitch, the Curt # 14090, being installed on a '97 GMC Savana which you can use as a guide for your installation.

For wiring which will give you a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # C55335. It is also strongly recommended you use Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors # 11755 to help prevent any type of corrosion in your connector, which will increase its durability and extend its lifespan. I have added a link to a video of this harness being installed on a '97 Savana for you.

I also recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which is for 2” hitches and may fulfill your towing needs in one tidy package; two ball mounts - one with a 3/4” rise or 2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise or 4” drop – along with a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip.
