Do Jaws of Curt A16 Fifth Wheel Hitch Need to be Closed When Not In Use
Updated 06/11/2020 | Published 04/12/2019 >
Question:
I purchased an A16 hitch which direct mounts to my 2019 Chev 2500HD shortbox with factory pucks. It is easy to operate the handle to uncouple or open the jaws. However it is very difficult to close the jaws after the trailer king pin is removed. My question is Is the jaw mechanism in an at rest position if left open or in the ready to couple position? I want to ensure the hitch will not be damaged when not in use.

You do not need to close the jaws of the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16520-16025 when not in use. It's designed to be left open until you need to connect it to a trailer. This is why it's difficult for you to close the jaws when there isn't a trailer connected.

I bought a Curt A16 non-slider 5th wheel hitch. When I go to unhook the trailer from the hitch I cannot get the jaws to open when I uncouple. This unit has dual closing jaws when coupled. For this model are the jaws supposed to remain closed (not locked) when uncoupling and ONLY open up when the vehicle pulls forward?
