Why Do Friction Anti-Sway Bars Make Noise and Need to be Disconnected to Reverse Trailer
Updated 04/09/2019 | Published 04/07/2019 >
Question:
Is it normal for the anti sway bar to make loud noises when maneuvering at low speeds with it tight? And, why cant you back up with it set? Is it possible to set it too tight? Thank you

Expert Reply:
All weight distribution/sway control systems make some noise since they all rely on friction to do their job.
The stand-along friction sway control devices like the Reese # 83660 are best disconnected before you back up a trailer or they are likely to be damaged. Disconnecting them is really not an issue since you do not need sway control when you reverse the trailer at low speed.
Tension on these devices is adjustable and it can be set based on feel when you're towing forward. If the tension is set too tight the trailer might feel "jumpy" and it will not track your tow vehicle as smoothly. You want enough tension to keep the trailer motion under control but not so much that it causes the trailer to move erratically.
