How Does Hand Brake on Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Work?

Question:
In your web link above, does the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch,TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive - Hand Brake - 2,500 lbs # DL14830 ratchet in both directions? You recommended this winch for an application where the customer is pulling up then reversing to lower down a trailer on an incline. On the winch, how do you actually reverse to the lowering position and safely reverse the direction of the pull? Is the ratchet released putting the winch in free wheel and the hand brake is used to control the reversed momentum?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,500 lbs # DL14830 will only ratchet when being pulled in. The output will free-wheel and allow you to control that free-wheel speed with the integrated hand brake. The hand brake will put friction on the free wheeling cylinder to slow the pull and help you control the reversed momentum. To switch into that reverse function from the ratcheting you simply will apply a little tension to the handle and then remove the flip the ratcheting pawl away from the gear.
