Question:
Should the tekonsha p2 read anything when there is no trailer connected. The last p2 I had read voltage when accelerating .. I had plugged the brake controller in a day or two before actually connecting my trailer, and I believe it showed voltage. I just got a replacement p2, and was wondering if it is ok to plug in before connecting to the trailer? I am assuming it should read n.c. For a little while and then nothing of working correctly.. are my assumptions correct? Thank you in advance !

Yes, you are correct in that the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885 will read "N.C" while there is no trailer connected. You can absolutely leave it plugged in while while not towing as well. If you receive a voltage indicator on the Prodigy P2 while there is no trailer connector then there is a short on the usually blue brake output wire that leads from the brake controller all the way back to the trailer connector. You would first want to check the pins inside the trailer connector for corrosion and then trace the brake output wire from the brake controller to the trailer connector while checking for breaks or replace it entirely with part # 10-1-1.
