Can I use an elbow pad on a 40 gal. tank?

An elbow heater pad is not designed to be used with tanks it fits on pipes. For example the 13" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000161 is designed to be used on 3 inch pipes while the 8" x 3" Elbow Heater Pad for RVs # 277-000162 is designed for use with 1-1/2 inch pipe.
For your 40-gallon RV holding tank I highly recommend the ThermaHeat RV Holding Tank Heater Pad w/ Thermostat # 277-000163. This this pad sticks right on your tank and has a thermostat which turns on when your tank drops to 45 degrees and turns off when it hits 67 degrees; the pad is even capable of thawing out a tank system that may already be frozen.
